Bucks Gala Day 2009

Saturday 10th October 2009 was the second Bucks Gala Day tournament. Twenty eight teams entered, but one had to drop out at the last moment, leaving 27 teams to compete for the trophy. The event was staged, as last at the Handy Cross bowls centre by the kind offices of Handy Cross bowls club. Bowling started promptly at 10.00 am and continued without a break for almost eight hours. The competition was held on 14 mats with more than 130 bowlers taking part. This is more than a quarter of all the registered bowlers in Buckinghamshire, all gathered in one hall. Very impressive and all thanks to Bob Hine’s pre tournament organisation.

Some idea of the activity level can be gained by the general view of the hall shown above. The tournament was organised as four groups with seven teams in each group, each team consisting of a triple and a pair. Every team played three games with the triples playing six ends and the pairs playing nine ends. The winner of each group, determined by the highest total shot count, progressed to a semi-final match.

The semi finals were Coleshill against Wendover 2 and Hawkslade against Chinnor 2.

Whilst the semi-finals were being played a plate competition was organised. Nineteen teams entered this competion. This had a similar organisation to the main competition except each team only played two games, with triples playing three ends and pairs five ends. The winner was the team scoring the highest number of shots.

It was won by Haddenham B with 29 shots in their two games. Congratulations to Haddenham B.

Following the plate competition the final of the main competition was held between Coleshill and Chinnor 2. The pairs and the triples were played on adjacent mats concurrently. The final winners were Coleshill, many congratulations to them.

The prizes were presented by Len Ward, Chairman of the BSMBA.
