On Saturday 4th February, Bucks travelled to the Caroline Chisholm School in Northampton to play their first round KO match against Essex. Battling against the cold in the vast sports hall, both singles unusually, lost their first round games. Fortunately the pairs made up for it by winning both their games. The triples and fours both won one and lost one so at the half way stage honours were even with only a very few shots separating the two teams.
After a short break, battle commenced once again with the singles winning one and losing one, while the pairs, after struggling with stiff opposition, did it again and won both their games. That gave Bucks an extra 2 bonus points for the aggregate score. At that stage, Bucks needed just five more points from four games so the pressure was on the triples and fours to come good. In two amazing games which swung backwards and forwards, both triples tied their games 11 shots each. A remarkable situation, which still left Bucks needing at least one win from the fours plus the aggregate bonus.
As it happened, the fours of Irene Roberts, Theresa Wade, Joan Northcott and skip Brian Latham and Helen Jarvis, Jenny Stallard, Peter Coker and skip Linda Coker, both won their games giving Bucks the additional points required.
The final score was Bucks 186 shots and 24 points, Essex 180 shots and 16 points. Bucks now go through to the quarter finals and meet Kent in the next round.
